April 2014 Task Force letter to the Council

Library Task Force Recommendation PDF

Library Needs Assessment & Master Plan

The Library Task Force was authorized by the Columbia Heights City Council on October 24, 2011, and charged to be a fact-finding organization to explore the possible replacement of the library building either with a single building or the library and city hall with a combined facility. Since their initial meeting in March 2012, the Task Force has spent more than 40 hours together soliciting community feedback, analyzing existing services and conditions, visiting potential sites, touring facilities, and engaging in lively debate.

On March 4, 2013, the Task Force submitted a recommendation, vision statement and summary of needs to the City Council. The Task Force will formally present their recommendation at the April 8, 2013, Council meeting.

The Task Force recommends the immediate replacement of the existing library with a new library building ranging in size from 20,500-24,000 square feet, on one-level, on a 2.5 to 3 acre site. They envision a new library as a community-oriented public meeting space dedicated to life-long learning and serving children, young adults, adults, community groups and business organizations. The new library should incorporate flexible spaces for multiple uses, natural light, and electronic information technologies that allow for future development. Details can be found in the attached documents.
